SIMCITY: BUILD AND DESTROY: OUR FAVOURITE DISASTERS
Constructing your dream city is a lot of fun. But you know what’s even more fun? Destroying it! Well, if you’re devious like us. That’s why every SimCity game has given you the option to not only build cities, but also lay waste to them giving you multiple Sim-fearing disasters to play with.
To celebrate Disaster Week starting tomorrow on our Facebook page, we asked a few members of the team to name their favourite disasters from past SimCity games. If this whets your destructive appetite, come back next week to read more about the disasters in the new SimCity. Until then, let’s tiptoe around our debris-filled memory lane.
Lead Producer Kip Katsarelis:
My favourite disaster type from SimCity has to be the Giant Monster attack, my favourite one being Servo the Robot attack in SimCity 4. I love sci-fi and giant robots, so naturally the robot attack stands out in my memory. Watching Servo fly into my city, unleash a wave of flying dishes on my poor Sims and then launching up into the sky to go terrorise some other poor city was a real “Wow!” moment for me. Maybe I’m a little twisted, but I can’t count how many cities I’ve built up only to tear down with a disaster. Wait until you see what we have planned in the new SimCity!
Producer Jason Haber:
One of my favourite parts of SimCity is the disasters. I remember playing the first SimCity as a kid and using the earthquake disaster to cause havoc across my city. While I would usually trigger this on my own, sometimes it would occur when I was cheating too much (getting more Simoleons by typing “FUND FUND FUND”).
Creative Director Ocean Quigley:
My favourite disaster was the robot attack disaster from SimCity 4. We used the robot maid model from The Sims, but scaled it up to giant size. It shot destructive dishes from its chest, wandered around destroying buildings, and eventually left. It also tended to wander towards your cursor.

Lead Designer Stone Librande:
Without a doubt, it was the UFO from SimCity 4: Rush Hour. I’m a huge fan of sci-fi movies, especially ones where a highly advanced race of aliens blows up the world’s famous landmarks. Being able to recreate those explosive moments was always a satisfying way of dealing with my city’s problems.
Lead Gameplay Scripter Guillaume Pierre:
Growing up in France, where there’s no tectonic activity, SimCity was one of the closest way I could experience the power of earthquakes. Of course, now that I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, it’s easy to feel blasé about them. The first one I experienced was around 2am on a late August night back in 2000, and at the time I was living on the 4th floor of a soft-story building. These are the worst type of building to be in when the ground shakes, and after that event I never lived in one again. Now I feel a little guilty about torturing my Sims!
