I have always been a massive fan of FPS From COD to F.E.A.R. I enjoy the stories and the freedom of the role play, sometime the realism is questionable in some of them, but deep down I will give any First person shooter a Fair crack of the Fisher whip when it comes to reviewing.
Now I know that know that Golden Eye was one hell of a benchmark for the bond game franchise, It also put the nose out of joint when other gaming companies who tried to replicate the game, and the game-play and multiplayer options and its longevity.
Bond legends is possibly the closest to Golden Eye that I have come across. The detail in the characters sprite is really quite good, Daniel Craig, Oddjob, Goldfinger and the others look like they have stepped out of the film and into the game. It is a promising touch that actors have faith in the game enough to lend their voices to a game. In the past this would have been a big gamble.
The game play is about 70% complete, there are some glitches such as bond henchmen falling through walls and if I remember right, when you shoot some one once it usually means you die, right? but these guys it tends to take a whole clip of the PP7 to kill one of these guys. The levels are big enough to keep anyone who isn't interested in multi-player going, but I was a tad concerned that both campaigns were borderline identical. The challenge mode was a bit of a Golden Eye rip off .
The script is okay. Like I said the actor voicing add credibility, its a very nice touch that they keep Daniel Craigs woodeness even in a game. Bravo! I also remember Jaws being a mute in the films yet he talks in this game, If you're twelve this won't bother you but as a 30+ sat in his tuxedo blowing kisses at his Diane Rigg cardboard cut out I was a little disjointed.
I'm glad that the game designers in their infinite wisdom decided that Bond can't carry the Argos catalogue in weapons and gadgets because that would just be ridiculous. His gadgets consist of an smartphone which doesn't have Angry Birds on it. A smartphone that cracks safes, opens locks, shoots laser but best of all....TELLS THE TIME!.
All in all this game is fun and will keep a gamer interested until the big boys come to play, But as soon as they do it will be shelved in my house. I tried to be positive, like Mitt Romney the morning after. I'm indifferent at best.
6/10 Good effort but a Golden Eye it is not. Originality and challenging story mode needs work and the weapon choice is limited but I don't mind that. The AI of the Henchmen is a little too high. if they weren't henchmen they would be in MENSA!
