Games Booth invited guest blogger Trev ‘The Rev’ to give us his opinion on the latest Pokemon ‘Black’ or ‘White’ so here he is..
As a massive Pokemon fan I couldn’t wait to receive my pre-ordered Pokemon Black – the fifth instalment of the Pokemon series. As soon as I got the game I hastily took it out of the box and put it in the DS – my new journey had begun and for the next two days I was encapsulated by the fantasy region of Unova.
The ultimate question in Pokemon is Grass, Water or Fire and as the game begins you’re delivered your package which contains either:
Snivy – the grass type Pokemon
Tepig – the fire type Pokemon
Oshawott – the water type Pokemon
I became the trainer of an Oshawott and armed with the ‘essential’ Pokedex I began travelling the land of Unova encountering other trainers and battling many other Pokemon’s , who like in previous games you gain skills and points from when you defeat them – or even better catch their Pokemon. There are 8 gyms across the land that you must enter and defeat the owners Pokemons – on your quest to become the Ultimate Pokemon Trainer.
There are friends along the way to help you out but there are also some enemies – Team Plasma and their master Ghetsis are doing whatever they can to plunder your chances of becoming champion. There are other characters you meet, such as ‘N’ but you’ll have to discover their mysteries for yourself as I don’t want to give too much away!
On your journey you’ll catch Pokemon, fight intense battles, enter new locations and gyms you'll also quickly learn that Pokemon can evolve. When they do, they change their appearance and their statistics may change greatly. Pokemon evolve in many ways: some by levelling up, some when you use items on them, and some when you trade them to a friend.
The three starter Pokémon, Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott, will eventually evolve into Servine, Pignite, and Dewott when they reach a high enough level.
With plenty of new ways to battle, new pokemon and even seasons in Onavo this Pokemon episode will keep you engrossed for hours and not dissapoint.
I found the fifth generation of the Pokemon series not too difficult and not too easy all at the same time. I know the saying ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ but there’s also ‘ A change is as good as a rest’. Sometimes improvement and change can be beneficial - some changes that would’ve made a difference to this game could be different types of Pokemon to choose from at the start such as electric or dark ground and maybe after doing the Elite gyms you can retake the gyms on a harder setting, but these are just my ideas and niggles not complaints.
Overall I am very impressed with the game and now the aim for me is to try to get all six hundred plus Pokemon which are available somehow, somewhere within the game, but this task in itself will not be easy and will take much longer than this review.
I would say this is the best Pokemon game out so far and hope the saga continue with a sixth Pokemon
Until then enjoy
Trev the Rev
