Adobe Helps Nurture Young Creative Talent with New Online Courses for UK Students

New Adobe Generation courses aim to develop digital skills and highlight career options in the creative industry to young people

Adobe has announced the rollout of Adobe Generation, an exciting set of online courses aimed at helping students aged 14-19 to develop new skills and explore future career options in the creative industry. The new courses, which will begin from 1stOctober, are being launched after a successful pilot course in Games Design in May 2012. The new courses will cover three digital disciplines: Animation, Photo Imaging and Games Design.

Adobe Generation provides students with a real-world perspective on different careers in the creative industry.  Each week students will receive first hand insight from industry experts, such as games designer and animator Luke Whittaker, who will share what it is like to work in their chosen field and advice for budding creatives.

The courses will take place over Adobe Connect and will give students the technical know-how to inspire them to be a games designer on the next Call of Duty or producer of the next big Hollywood blockbuster. Students will be taught a different aspect of their chosen discipline each week, such as plotting a story line of a game or learning how to create a panoramic image. They will also be taught specialist digital skills using Adobe software, such as how to use Adobe Photoshop CS6 or Adobe Flash Professional CS6. At the end of each session, students will be set different tasks related to the skills they learned, so they can put their skills into practice. The student with the best work will then win Adobe software, so they can continue developing skills on tools used in industry.

Students will automatically get access to a virtual learning environment hosting a range of learning resources including video tutorials, ‘how to’ guides and a recording of each session, which they can download and revisit at a later date to help support their learning. They will also have access to a student forum where they can review and comment on each other’s work, enabling them to learn valuable skills such as meeting deadlines and working collaboratively to achieve goals.

To help validate the skills learned on each of the courses and to give their CVs and UCAS applications a competitive edge, Adobe will hold an online graduation ceremony where they will receive a certificate on completion of the course. They will also be encouraged to continue their learning and move towards Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) - a national qualification validating entry-level skills in digital communications using Adobe tools.

Liz Wilkins, Senior Marketing Manager, Education at Adobe UK said: “Helping students learn new digital skills has never been more important. We wanted to create a set of courses which would inspire and excite them about the future opportunities these skills can open up to them. Whether that is helping them to become the next Spielberg, or the hottest games designer since Ben Chichoski. Adobe Generation courses are fun and inspirational and aimed to give a real world view of the different digital careers out there. It’s also a great way for teachers to learn more about digital skills, which they can go on to integrate into their own lessons.”

Lydia Odai, a student at Leeds College of Art, who was a winner of the Adobe Generation pilot Games Course that ran in May said:  “I’ve always been interested in gaming, so was excited to sign up to the Adobe Generation Games Design course and learn more about the skills needed to succeed in the industry. I didn’t have any experience with games design when I signed up, but the courses were easy to follow so before I knew it, I was learning complex skills such as coding! Being taught by industry insiders really inspired me, giving a firsthand perspective on the gaming industry – warts and all! I’ll be starting a BA in Computer Visualisation & Animation at Bournemouth University in September so hope to be able to build upon the skills I have already learned through Adobe Generation. The games design course really helped reinforce my decision to go in the creative industry and I’d recommend anyone interested in learning new digital skills to sign up to the new set of courses!”
