PLANTS VS. ZOMBIES GARDEN WARFARE BOSS MODE, CLASSES AND MULTIPLAYER | FTW SEPTEMBER 2013
In the latest FTW interview, Matt Littler and Darren Jeffries are joined by producer Brian Lindley at gamescom 2013 to discuss Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare. The transition to the Xbox One sees Garden Warfare transform from tower defence to a third-person multiplayer experience.
Though much of the action is based on the ground, boss mode allows a player to take control of an overworld view of the battlefield (a mode similar to Battlefield 4's Commander Mode). The boss can provide aid for teammates or even drop an airstrike to wipe out the enemy.
Garden Warfare is mainly focused towards multiplayer, whether that be a mass 24-player competitive brawl or a 2-player split-screen mode. Memorable characters from the Plants vs Zombies series make an appearance. The Peashooter and Sunflower return for the plants whilst zombies such as the football zombie will return as the 'All-Star'.
FTW: Boss Mode, can you talk us through that?
Brian Lindley: Absolutely. Boss mode is going to be a feature that is exclusive to the Xbox One. One player can be acting as the Boss and what they get using Kinect or a SmartGlass device is a top down view of the battlefield. It's alittle bit of our kind of wink and nod to Commander Mode in Battlefield. Basically the Boss oversees everything that's going on and it can do things to support their team. So, they can drop down Revive Stations and drop down Health Stations, so if you can see team mates that are low on health, you see them from the top down with a low health bar you can drop a Health Station and get them healed up. The coolest thing that the Boss can do is drop in an artillery strike. If you collect enough resources and you manage to time it properly and you got a good cluster of enemies below you can drop what we call Zomb Bomb strikes from the Zombie perspective, but Crazy Dave can call in Cherry Bomb strikes.
FTW: Is there a single player campaign or is this full time multi-player?
BL: We are a multi-player focussed game so our primary modes are 24-player competitive multi-player, we also have 4-player co-op and other thing that we have been talking about quietly is a two player split screen co-op mode.

FTW: Plants, Zombies, take us through who's there, who's missing, who's been killed in action
BL:On the plant side we've taken a lot of the original characters from the original Plants vs. Zombies. We have the Peashooter which is kind of our infantry styled character, the Sunflower - very familiar, a sort of a healer class for the plant team, we have the Cactus who's sort of our long range specialist - sniper if you will and then The Chomper who's a really interesting mix of close range mele and on the Zombie side we've gotten a little creative. So the first class we have is the Soldier, and the Soldier is very much sort of similar to the Peashooter on the plant side, sort of a frontline infantry fighter and we also have the All-Star which is someone that we have sort of taken as the football character from the original PvZ and given a few more tricks up his sleeve.
