STEP INTO CHRISTMAS AT GADGET SHOW LIVE @ CHRISTMAS
Pavegen lights up Christmas at Gadget Show Live @ Christmas - 1-3 November, Earls Court
Pavegen Systems is an award winning energy-harvesting company that converts the kinetic energy of people’s footsteps into renewable electricity. The technology will be used to power the Christmas trees in the entrance of the Gadget Show Live @ Christmas, which takes place 1-3 November at Earls Court Exhibition Centre, London.

Based on the popular Channel 5 programme, Gadget Show Live @ Christmas is the leading festive tech event in the UK. Pavegen will harvest the energy from the footsteps of over 30,000 Christmas shoppers and technology enthusiasts to light up the trees at the show.

Pavegen’s elegant design converts the kinetic energy of footfall into electricity that can be stored in a battery or used to power street lighting, advertising, information displays, and communications technology. When stepped on, the Pavegen surface flexes a near imperceptible 5mm, generating up to 8 watts of power over the duration of the footstep. The highly engaging off grid technology can provide a low-carbon contribution in areas of high footfall, regardless of the weather.
Installed successfully at events and sites round the world, including this year’s Paris Marathon and last year’s London 2012 Olympic Games, the Pavegen flooring tiles are able to collect, monitor and communicate live data using its unique API wireless interface. The software can calculate the amount of power generated and the number of footsteps on each tile, as well as control energy efficient lighting and send out live updates via social media channels. Imagine your Christmas tree powered by your footsteps spreading holiday cheer by tweeting festive messages to all.
Pavegen have a successful track record of powering the Christmas spirit, with the most notable installation in December 2011 at the Midsummer Place Shopping Centre in Milton Keynes. Enlisting the help of over 100,000 shoppers rocking around the Christmas tree, Pavegen generated nearly 3,000kW to power the lights.

Pavegen installations in shopping centres and events are designed to encourage the visitors and surrounding communities to engage with a tangible and people-powered solution and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. It helps them recognise the opportunities for an innovative off-grid energy technology within high footfall areas, all year round. This installation will help to spread the word that a smart, low-carbon future is within our grasp, and that the disruptive technologies we need to make this a reality are already available today.
Laurence Kemball-Cook, CEO and inventor of the Pavegen technology says “Pavegen could play a key role in the smart cities of the future. Imagine if people walking, running and jumping, could help power the lights and applications in our cities. Lighting up Christmas trees is the first step towards Pavegen’s vision of a more sustainable tomorrow.”
