Captain America: Super Soldier for the Nintendo 3DS is another comic book super hero turned games hero game – much like the recent Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters.
As Captain America you explore a once lovely castle that is now a military institute run by the evil Red Skull and his terrorist HYDRA organisation.
Using your trusty shield to deflect enemy fire and scale walls, you make your way through the castle, solving puzzles and fighting the HYDRA.
The gameplay itself is fairly easy, controlling Captain America needs little directional ability simply point and jump. It’s more challenging to control his shield when throwing it against walls and at enemies. Controlled by the touch screen it’s a little annoying to get the direction right – but then I guess the younger generation has smaller fingers that I do!
The puzzles themselves again aren’t challenging they mainly consist of using you shield to manoeuvre lasers around a room or destroying generators, the more challenging part of the puzzle rooms are the amount of enemies that get in your way and put you under fire!
Overall the gameplay is average, the colours and animation of the game also vary from good to average. That said is it a good casual game, it’s not something you’d settle down for several hours to play, but it would be good for keeping the kids amused on travels etc.
As a general observation I find that games that are being brought out for the 3DS are slightly lacking in gameplay content - the developers seem to be concentrating more on trying to gain the ‘Wow’ factor associated with 3D (and I’m a massive fan of 3D). I feel that this is something that this game is suffering from.
In conclusion, the game will be fun for young boys who want to enjoy a super hero game on the 3DS, but it could’ve worked better as a 2D game with more content and more challenging gameplay (Again just my personal opinion though due to not being the biggest fan of the 3DS).
