The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman

Guest review by Jack Carter

Spidey is back and better than ever. You start as Peter and you’re in Oscorp industries having a tour with your girlfriend Gwen. What I need to point out is that this game starts where the new film finishes, so it might be worth going to watch it first (I did).
The main story is that another Doctor who is working on the cross species project, which was the work Doctor Connors, was working on until he became insane and turned into a giant lizard.  While on the tour you see more mutated humans like Rhino and Scorpion, fans of super villains will be pleased to see their appearance.  After a dramatic break out, the super mutated species are free roaming in the city and now it’s Spidey’s job to hunt them down and find a cure with and for Dr Connors.

The way you play as Spiderman is with a third person cameras and it kind of feels like another superhero game – Batman Arkham City  - it’s like it stole some of the bats key qualities like combat and stealth but not so well, however  it’s got some of the finer points that we love about Spidey, free roam, and web swinging, which  are the main reasons I enjoyed this game.  Swinging from building to building with ease is the reason we fall in love with the Spiderman games, however it wasn’t an ‘Amazing adventure’ – it feels rushed, the stealth and control I spoke about earlier aren’t actually that controlled. It’s like your Spiderman character knows what to do without you doing the actual controlling and the stealth isn’t stealthy,  e.g when you’re about to take out a bad guy, he seems to see you and even manage to move out of the way.   Then there are the camera issues, because of the speed of Spiderman you need to constantly change the camera angle in order to get the best views of the scenery around you, the bosses and the required action points.

BOSS BATTLES

Well they’re called boss battles, but they’re actually either annoying machine like fighting objects or the escaped mutant species from the lab that you’re out to capture, cure or return.  The first is a giant robot with six legs, lasers and every kind of gun you could think of.   Think robotic insect! Here you get to use the new Spiderman feature (Web Interact) where you go into first person mode and aim where you want Spidey to go and he jumps into action.

After ten minutes of playing you already get the feeling that you actually are the web slinging Super hero, so after a few hours of game play, you feel epic! (sorry that sounded like and advert).

This game has great graphics, the buildings and skylines, the mutants and cross beings are well created and thought out.  As I said the movement of Spidey, with the free roam and web swinging are enjoyable but the camera and stealth modes aren’t great.

Overall, it’s a great game and very enjoyable, however it’s all a bit speedy, not allowing the gamer to take in the game as much as he / she could.
